Sky Ferreira - 07.04.2024 - The Ritz, Manchester
Indie/pop darling Sky has never played manchester before so this was quite an anticipated gig, on a miserable sunday evening the crowd was probably a little sparser than hoped for, my second birthday gig after From The Jam at the same venue the night before. Oddly there was no support band tonight as the security alerted me as doors opened at 7pm and Sky was not due on stage until 9.30pm (punctuailty not being Sky`s strong point, but more about that later)

Sky has been around for a while, a couple of EP`s in 2011 and 2012 respectivley releasing her first album `Night Time,My Time` in October 2013 the long awaited second album `Masochism` has been delayed several times initially due for release in 2015 the album has been pushed back both in 2016 and 2018 with a release in 2024 more of a possibilty than a promise.
Hanging around is part and parcel of a Sky Ferreria gig and as the lights dimmed it was just after 10pm when Sky emerged from the shadows and launched into `Boys` after a restart due to tech issues, then straight into a fabulous rendition of `24 hours` the crowd we already in the palm of her hand and each song was greeted with a roar far louder than it should have been given the venue was not as packed as we would have liked. Eight tracks from the debut album interspersed with tracks from the first two EP`s plus the two traxks muted to be on the next album `Downhill Lullaby` and `Don`t Forget` Her stage presence, partly shrouded by shades and blonde locks, added an air of mystery, yet her raw, emotive delivery left no doubt about her connection with the audience. The roar when she ditched the shades was heartwarming as she poured all her heart and soul into a stunning `Nobody asked me (If I was ok)` We should, we really should, it`s a rarity to see a vocalist pour so much emotion into a song and each one was bristling with emotion tonight. A great cover of Til Tuesday`s `Voices carry` followed by `innocent kind` and a blistering `Omanko` Sky asked if the lights could be dimmed, then asked if she could have red in the dimmed lights before a beautiful version of `Sad Dream` achingly beautiful vocals backed by just a guitar. It was all set up for a barn storming finish until a member of the road crew, i`m guessing called her attention and announced that the gig was finished. `We`re going to get into so much trouble for this` leading the crowd to hope for just one more song, `Everything is emberassing` or `i blame myself` but hopes were crushed when the house lights came on, Sky did come back on to apologise and told told the crowd she had been led to believe the Curfew was 12am not 11pm but to be fair to the girl that hour was a testament to her undeniable talent, leaving a lasting impression on all fortunate enough to witness it. I wish that hour would never end. Two nights two very very different gigs at the same venue.
